About the Hunt

The Camargo Hunt is one of the oldest hunts in North America. We pursue the thrill of the chase along with great social and equestrian activities. We ride in picturesque areas of southwestern Ohio and northern to central Kentucky. The country varies from trails in wooded areas to open fields to the hills of middle Kentucky.

The Camargo Foxhounds

Foxhounds enjoy the thrill of the sport under the direction of the huntsman. For each meet, our huntsman selects hounds that best suit the country, and carefully crafts a pack that includes several more experienced hounds, as well as some younger hounds that are still learning yet very keen.

With such varied country to hunt, the Camargo breeding program draws on the strengths of all four breeds of foxhounds. We have many Crossbreds (Crossbred is considered a breed and may consist of any combination of English, American, and Penn-Marydel hounds). Our huntsman finds that the hounds with more of the English in their blood do quite well when we hunt our Kentucky fixtures, as they display more stamina and toughness. When in Indian Hill, she selects the hounds that have more Penn-Marydel and American blood. The Penn-Marydel is especially good in thick covert and tight spaces, with a big voice and a cold nose, and a desire to hunt closer together (and closer to the huntsman) while still giving good sport.

FEATURED HOUNDS

AH Peter ‘17

Affectionately known as Peter Rabbit, this nice older hound is a real star both in the hunt field and in the show ring. His breeding is 70% American and 30% Penn-Marydel. His great voice and fairly close hunting style are perfect for our Indian Hill territory.

SH Andrew '18

Shakerag Andrew '18 is one of our older hounds, who is a wonderful stallion hound. He is the sire of Aspen and also of our "AR" centennial puppies. His get are fabulously put together and very biddable.

CH Aspen ‘23

Aspen is one of our young stars. ⭐️ He won the Entered Crossbred dog and was Reserve Champion Crossbred dog at the Carolinas hound show. He is the sire of the ‘RA’ litter of Centennial puppies, two of whom showed with him at Bryn Mawr and won.

THE HOUND RETIREMENT FUND

The Hound Retirement Fund is an independent, not-for-profit organization that seeks to gather and use resources for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes including, but not limited to, the care of retired sporting hounds, provision of emergency care for hounds, support of dog-related human organizations, and support of veterinary research project for sporting canines.
